Domain Guide
Interested about purchasing a domain but don’t know where to start? Here are a few pointers to help you get started.
1. First of all, please be aware that a domain costs real money and you must be over 18 (or have cleared the issue with your parents) in order to buy one.
2. Make sure you are familiar with an FTP program if you would like to freely run a website like mine. Domains do not work exactly like freewebs.com sites. There is a different technique when it comes to uploading all of your information. I use Core FTP for my site. You can click here to download it. If you are only looking to maintain a standard blogging website, you will not need to know how to use FTP.
3. Be aware that basic css knowledge will help you go a long way when owning a site. You must be willing to learn different codes and be quite quick to do so.
4. Now are you ready to start looking for your domain package. I am hosted with 1&1 (the biggest hosting company on the web with over 10 years of experiance) so I will be providing you with a link to their site. By clicking here you can choose the package that best suits your needs.
Mine was around $15 plus the $5 for the domain name. Keep in mind that I purchased my site roughly a year ago and there is no telling whether that package is still offered today. Their step by step guide will take you right through until you receive a message telling you when your domain will be ready.
Read carefully! Know all payment information including the monthly payments as well as good sales. Also, do not skip through the terms and conditions guide because you are responsible for your site and should very well know the consequences that may potentially arise in the future.
5. It takes at least 24 hours for the domain name to be fully functional. And once it’s ordered there is no going back and changing your mind about the name you picked. Choose wisely.
6. That’s all folks. Be careful, don’t get ripped off and (once again) make sure you know FTP and some CSS to get your site going.
